Nursery Notes: DIY Bird Mobile

I've been on the hunt for a mobile for the nursery and stumbled across yet another DIY project. I'm sure many of you have seen this bird mobile floating around the blogosphere. I, too, fell in love, and downloaded the free pattern (with step-by-step instructions) from Philly-based quilt and fabric shop, Spool, and set to work. It was a bit labor-intensive, but only because I have absolutely no skill and very little experience in sewing (I had to Google "how to sew a straight stitch" - no kidding).

Here's the cast of characters:

The bird is sewn! Now to turn inside out and stuff...

The birdies are finished. Whew! Next, I found 3 branches outside and sealed them up with a coat of Mod Podge, then sewed the birds onto the branches. I used a thin satin ribbon to tie the 3 branches together and hung the entire thing from the ceiling. It's a bit of a balancing act to get the birds all sitting on top of the branch, so I suggest waiting until the whole thing is hung and then adjusting from there.

Love it!! This is one of the most unique mobiles I've seen. I love the fabric you chose. For not having sewn before, it turned out great!
I recently found your blog and have been LOVING it! I am definitely inspired to start on some projects that I've been wanting to do. Thanks for sharing all your great ideas!
P.S. just saw that you are a local Nashvillian too! Yay, Nashvegas! :)

Love this!! And I love the shadow it leaves on the wall--that will be so fun for the little eggroll to watch. Good job!

Super cute!!! if the birdies keep slipping & ending up upside down on the branches, you could always put a little dab of fabric glue underneath them to keep them in place. i love the colors too! i'm using alot of dark/mustard-y yellow in our nursery too, since we don't know what we're having, but with brown, orange & green accents. our bedroom is a silvery grey tho, & i'm thinking on putting some yellow accents in it....i just love the combo of the two! it's been awesome to follow your blog & see eggrolls room come together!

Oh my goodness! That is absolutely adorable. I'm thinking about making a mobile myself but I doubt it will turn out anywhere near as perfect as yours. :) Also, I love your music site. You're a pretty rocking girl!

This mobile is just devine - you have done an amazing job....my baby is 4 yrs old now but I would still consider making her one of these - just gorgeous!
And your previous crafting efforts of cushion making completely inspired me and I made and gave 2 of my girlfriends them for their birthdays!
Love your blog - good luck with your 'Eggroll'!

Love the mobile! I will try to make some in Orange, green and blue for my baby boy's room! I love the gray fabric you used. My sister made me a nursing cover-up out of it and I smile every time I use it.
